Justin Jinsoo Kim is an experimental filmmaker and animator based in South Korea and the United States. His moving image work explores memories, myths, and the possibility of animation form as an alternative approach to documentation. Kim’s work has been screened internationally, including at the New York Film Festival, Cinéma du Réel, EXiS (Experimental Film&#38;amp;Video Festival in Seoul), Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and Jeonju International Film Festival. He has had a solo screening at Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater(REDCAT, USA). Kim received an MFA in Experimental Animation from the California Institute of the Arts and is a recipient of the MacDowell Fellowship(2022).

And the Moon Sets over the Temple That WasHD film, Color, Sound, 70'4'', 2025카메라는 경주 남산에 흩어져 있는 머리 없는 불상들을 찾아 길을 나선다. 무엇이, 누구에 의해 사라지고, 옮겨지고, 기록되어왔는가? 강과 바다와 산길을 사람들이 사진을 찍으며 거닐고 그곳에는 과거의 이미지들과 발굴의 욕망이 겹쳐진다.
The camera sets out on a journey to find the headless Buddha statues scattered across Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju. What has disappeared, who caused it to vanish, and how has it been recorded? People stroll along the river, the sea, and mountain paths, taking photographs, where images from the past and the desire for excavation overlap.

	
	A few dozen metres offshore from a pebble beach, a small cluster of rocks juts out from the water. At first glance, there is nothing here worth stopping to look at, yet young Koreans arrive and strike a series of poses. But when a hand places an old photograph of the same spot over the scene, you begin to think that this place might be worth a closer look. The film won’t tell you that this is the location of the underwater tomb of the King of Silla, who unified Korea in the 7th century. The nature of the mounds that dot the landscape of the neighbouring city of Gyeongju; the structures rising there in the form of calabashes and pagodas; the reason you encounter so many decapitated Buddha statues there; or even the origin of the photographs superimposed over the landscapes, remain just as implicit. All the more so as the texts that appear on screen deliberately lead us down other paths: those of world exhibitions, creationist myths, the history of photographic techniques, and even archaeological digs.Justin Jinsoo Kim, an experimental filmmaker trained in animation techniques at CalArts, is shooting his first feature film here, in his hometown, clearly relishing the slight sense of dissonance he is creating with the narrative form he has chosen, which undermines the meditative calm of his shots and the tranquillity of the soundtrack. This environment, composed of figures carved into the rock, majestic tombs with slumbering curves, temples and military fortifications, indigenous beliefs absorbed into Buddhist practices, ancient wars and colonial rule, gradually reveals a space saturated with heterogeneous temporalities. A historical palimpsest; or, to borrow Claude Debussy’s Orientalist title, and the source of the film’s title: an image that is at once simple and verbose, transparent and layered.- Antoine Thirion,&#38;nbsp;Cinéma du Réel

The film conducts an elusive search for the traces of Lee Kyung Soo, a Korean War orphan adopted by a U.S. Navy officer. Lee’s image circulated widely across newspapers, magazines, and photographs—serving specific purposes and cultural narratives. Over time, these representations fractured, faded, and reemerged, leaving silences in the archive and gaps in visibility. The cut-out fragments from the scattered information are pieced together to imagine the child’s unspoken point of view throughout his wandering life.한국전쟁 직후 미 해군 장교에게 입양된 고아 이경수는 당시의 여러 매체에 드문드문 흔적을 남겼다. 신문, 잡지, 그리고 사진들에 담긴 이 씨의 궤적과 성장 과정은 당시 미국에서 매우 특정한 맥락과 목적을 띈 채 소개되고, 배포되었다. 시간이 흐르고 그의 자취는 분절되고, 사라지고, 또 다시 나타나며 침묵과 공백이 가득한 기록으로 남았다. 흩어진 정보에서 잘라낸 파편들이 엮이며 어디에도 담기지 않은 어린 방랑자의 시선을 상상한다.


	

이 영화는 거대한 이미지에서 픽셀로, 면에서 조각으로, 일체에서 부분으로 왕복 운동을 펼치는 추적극이다. 시간이 경과함에 따라 인물의 자취는 분절되고, 자료는 누락과 과잉 사이에서 불균등하게 축적된다. 뚜렷한 목적에 의해 표상되고 배열된 한 인물의 서사를 재-노출시키기 위해, &#38;lt;진짜 크리스마스&#38;gt;는 파편에 대한 상상을 덧붙이며 기록이 의도적으로 비워 둔 자리를 주시한다. 
	Collaging text and sound along with the grainy distortions of inkjet-printed imagery, Justin Jinsoo Kim’s (Personality Test, NYFF59) refractory archival dig pieces together the story of Lee Kyung Soo, an orphan of the Korean War adopted by a U.S. Naval officer in Westchester. With its careful manipulation of microhistorical fragments, A Real Christmas summons the neocolonial mythologies of the United States in the 1950s through its news media, uncovering traces of alternate voices and narrative lacunae. 
-NYFF-This film unfolds as an investigation that moves back and forth from the large image to the pixel, from surface to fragment, from wholeness to detail. As time passes, the traces of a person become increasingly fractured, while materials accumulate unevenly between absence and excess. To re-expose the narrative of a figure once represented and arranged according to a clear logic, A Real Christmas overlays fragments with imagination and turns its gaze toward the spaces the archive has deliberately left blank.

For the purpose of collection, preservation, and recording, numerous faces that existed in different times and places densely gather in a single space. Among them are photos of Koreans taken during the Japanese occupation era for physical measurements, and Buddha statues with severed heads for reasons unknown. The only remaining ancient Korean painting that captures the appearance of Dokkaebi, the Korean mythical goblin, is Gwi Hwa Jeon Do (1869) by Heo Ryeon. The Dokkaebi fire in the painting guides the path for the wandering lost faces.

수집, 보존, 그리고 기록이라는 목적을 위해 서로 다른 시간과 장소에 존재하던 수많은 얼굴들이 한 공간에 빽빽하게 모이곤 한다. 그 중에는 일제강점기 체격 측정을 위해 촬영된 한국인의 사진들과 알려지지 않은 이유로 머리가 잘린 불상들이 있다. 현재 남아있는 한국화 중에서 유일하게 도깨비의 모습을 담은 소치 허련의 그림 귀화전도(1869)의 도깨비불이 길을 잃은 얼굴들을 인도한다. 
	“장 뤽 고다르는 영화를 ‘밤의 박물관’에 비유했다. 박물관은 예술과 역사와 매체에 새겨진 권력관계가 복잡하게 길항하는 장소이며 영화가 탄생할 수 있던 도둑질의 장소이기도 하다. &#38;lt;귀화전도&#38;gt;는 살아 움직이는 도깨비불의 안내를 따라, 목 잘린 불상과 익명으로 기록된 조선인들의 신체/초상 사진으로 채워진 가상의 박물관을 항해한다. 사진과 조각과 회화는 각각의 표면에 해결되지 않은 역사와 일어나지 않은 상상을 새겨둔다. 영화의 스크린은 이처럼 사라진 흔적을 간직하고, 현실로 옮길 수 없는 픽션을 형상화하는 유령적 박물관학(museology)의 장소다.”-김병규, 전주국제영화제

	Jean-Luc Godard likened films to “museums of the night”. Museums are spaces where the power dynamics engraved within art, history, and media confront each other in a convoluted way, and are places of theft that allow films to be born. In Guidance by Dokkaebi Fire, we follow a dokkaebi fire toward a fictional museum full of headless Buddhist statues, anonymous bodies, and portraits of Joseon people. Each of the photos, pieces, and paintings sketch unrealized imaginations as well as histories that have not been resolved on the surface. As such, film screens are places of ghostly museology that contain vanished records and create manifestations of fiction that cannot come to being. (KIM Byeonggyu, Jeonju IFF)

In 1995, an astronomer proposed a peculiar project. It was to use the Hubble Telescope to capture a small part of the universe that was then known to be a void. In 1447, in the Chosun Dynasty, Prince Anpyeong had a dream of walking through a peach blossom forest shrouded in clouds and mist, and he asked the painter, Ahn Gyeon, to capture it in a painting. Through juxtaposing the two historical anecdotes, the film examines the images of ‘the far and near’ through printing, transforming, and distorting the photos from the NASA Image and Video Library.

1995년 한 천문학자가 엉뚱한 프로젝트를 제시했다. 아무것도 없다고 생각하던 우주의 작은 한 부분을 허블 망원경을 이용해 촬영해보자는 것이었다. 정묘년(1447년) 안평대군은 구름과 안개가 자욱히 서려있는 복숭아 나무 숲을 거니는 꿈을 꾸고 화가 안견에게 그것을 그림으로 그리도록 했다. 두 일화를 바탕으로 한 이 영화는 나사(NASA) 영상 이미지 라이브러리의 사진들을 인쇄, 변형, 왜곡하여 ‘멀고 가까운 곳’이 이미지가 되는 과정을 탐구한다.
	
	“Exploring both the abstractions of astrophotography and the documentary possibilities of classical Korean landscape painting, The Far and Near is a cosmic voyage into seemingly empty space, in which Kim collages and distorts inkjet prints of images from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope into chimeric spacescapes that evoke the oneiric spaces of Ahn Gyeon’s “Dream Journey to Peach Blossom Land,” a painting commissioned to document the dreams of 15th-century ruler Prince Anpyeong.” - NYFF -

Four soldier puppets walk in a squared space in a movement inspired by Samuel Beckett’s Quad (1981). By visually adapting Deleuze’s ideas on Quad (The Exhausted, 1995), the film explores the concept of “exhausting the possible” within the time and space in stop-motion animation form. The puppets—and the printed images of the puppets—slowly disintegrate and the residue from the repetitions remains to become new possibilities.군인 형상을 한 네 개의 인형이 사무엘 베케트의 &#38;lt;쿼드(Quad, 1981)&#38;gt;에서 따온 움직임으로 네모난 공간을 걷는다. 질 들뢰즈의 &#38;lt;쿼드&#38;gt;에 관한 분석 &#38;lt;소진된 인간(1995)&#38;gt;을 시각적으로 재해석한 이 영화는 스톱모션 애니메이션을 통해 ‘가능성의 소진’을 탐구한다. 인형들, 그리고 인쇄된 인형들의 이미지는 천천히 붕괴되고 반복의 잔여물로써 새로운 가능성을 상상한다.


	“Four soldiers walk on a rectangular stage. The soldiers with restricted movements gradually break away from the stage, while media devices and optical expressions that add variations to the pattern of their footsteps begin to trespass into the frame. Throughout the short running time, The Exhausted serves self-reflecting questions of the media that lie dormant in the film. This ambitious film explores the gap between the rectangular space within the frame and the square composition of the camera. It also reveals the subtle tension caused by the movement of stop-motion images, off-screen voices, and the early cinematic traces that capture the moving object. [KIM Byeonggyu, JEONJU IFF]”



	네 명의 군인이 직사각형 무대를 걷고 있다. 엄격하게 통제된 몸짓을 수행하던 군인들은 서서히 무대를 이탈하고, 사각의 프레임에는 그들의 패턴화된 발걸음에 변형을 가하는 매개적 장치와 광학적 표현들이 난입하기 시작한다. &#38;lt;소진된 인간&#38;gt;은 짧은 러닝타임에 영화에 잠재된 매체의 자기 반영적 질문들을 녹여낸다. 프레임 내부의 직사각형 공간과 카메라의 사각 구도가 맺는 간극을 탐구하고, 스톱모션 이미지의 움직임과 외화면의 목소리, 그리고 움직이는 대상을 포착하는 초기 영화적 흔적이 일으키는 미묘한 긴장을 드러내는 야심 찬 작품이다. Personality Test / 심리테스트
HD, Color, Sound, 8’09” 2021

 A private memory is examined and explored through a simple personality test found on the internet. The photographs and sounds, recorded by the interviewee at the forest and other places, become distorted and transformed by the artist or the audience. In the reconstructed forest, the questioner, the interviewee, and the audience start to picture images of an animal, a house, a sound of water, and beyond.

인터넷에 떠도는 간단한 심리테스트를 통해 한 개인의 기억을 탐험한다. 테스트 질문에 대답하는 사람이 직접 숲에서 그리고 다른 곳들에서 기록한 사진과 음성은 작가, 혹은 관객에 의해 왜곡되고 변형된다. 질문하는 자, 대답하는 자 그리고 관객은 새롭게 재구성되는 숲 속에서 동물, 집, 물소리, 그리고 그 너머의 것들을 상상한다.






	
	“A walk in the woods, an encounter with an animal, a body of water. On the soundtrack, a woman’s voice responds to an internet personality quiz, while grainy, inkjet printouts—animated and collaged by the filmmaker—approximate the imagined scenes. Distortions in the reproduction of word and picture accompany the blur of memory and fantasy, past experience and desire.”

Starting from the inquiry of what animation is, the artist finds himself located in between different sequences of time. A physical space in a film is always frozen within a small fragment of time—a frame. The artist dynamically explores each space as the frames become combined, transformed, rearranged, and repeated.
애니메이션이란 무엇인가라는 고민에서 시작하여 작가는 다양한 시간의 배열 사이에 위치하게 된다. 프레임이라는 작은 시간 안에 멈춰있는 공간들이 합체, 변형, 전위, 반복되면서 생기는 다양한 관계들을 탐구한다.
